About the artist

Islam Zaher is a contemporary Egyptian artist, born in Cairo in 1972. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek, Cairo, in 1994, and won several prizes at the Youth Salon between 1995 and 1998, including the Jury Prize and the International Critics Association (AICA) prize. His solo shows include Out of Vacuum and Intuited Happiness at Karim Francis Espace, Pink and Lamentation, Passive Constructions and The Shadow of Absence at Gallery Misr, and Remnants of Enchantment at Gypsum Gallery. He has shown at Beirut Art Fair and Art Cairo at the Grand Egyptian Museum. Zaher is one of the few contemporary Arab artists to reframe the human body as a philosophical and psychological battleground, steering clear of decorative gestures or overtly contextual identities. Over three decades his work has moved from impulsive expressiveness to a composed, structurally symbolic language: figures more distilled yet denser with affect, compositions that resemble fractured geometries, where pain is not merely expressed, but structured.
